Main Characters and Point Plots
Our story begins differently than what other books would start, it starts with one of the many dark thoughts of Theodore Finch, a "troubled" senior in high schools thoughts of suicide. He basically asks, "Is today a good day to die"? Now, that's not something i'm sure anyone is used to reading in the first sentence from a book, especially the way the book itself is designed and titled, but basically we have here how Finch has a lot of thoughts about life and death and he likes to know or at least think his life, and his death or at his control and how he can choose how he wants to live his life. Later on we learn of Violet, a popular girl who loves to write and might be your typically high school girl but soon we learn the things that bothers her and how someone like her find herself in the company of Finch who seem to be literally completely different people.
Theme/Symbol
I feel like the main thing about this story is suicide, where its something Finch can't stop thinking about. I think it shows us how there are even mental illness that cause suicidal thoughts like what Finch has, and it wasn't till he went to another city to attend a support group where found himself with Amanda, a girl he recognizes from school and later on she tells Violet about Finch and how he swallowed a ton of pills; something he regularly does but this time even he wasn't in control (even though he never really was, just really lucky) but he ends up going to the hospital and realizing he admits to getting help for his problem behind Violets back but after this things only turned worse.(288-289)
